Call for Artists: residence for the year 2019

Aalto University artist-in-residence programme has functioned as a platform for transdisciplinary collaboration since 2011. The programme provides space and time for experimentality, criticality and new kinds of cooperation by giving artists a chance to expand their practice through all Aalto Schools. This year-long production residence aims at producing compelling and inspiring artworks stemming from a dialogue between art and science. At the same time, the residence creates possibilities in assessing different modes of knowledge production from new angles. The residence is open for one artist per year.

The call for artists for the 2019 residence is now open. The residence will be co-hosted by the School of Chemical Engineering and the School of Science and we welcome applications from artists who are ready to commit to one-year period in Finland and whose practice engages with the Schools’ research nucleus: chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, materials science, applied physics, mathematics, computer science, and neuroscience. Aalto University is an internationally recognised university in which art and science meet technology and economics. Created in 2010 from a high-profile merger between three leading universities in Finland — the University of Art and Design Helsinki, the Helsinki School of Economics, and the Helsinki University of Technology — Aalto University opens up new possibilities for strong multidisciplinary education and research. The university’s main campus is located in Otaniemi, Espoo, a stone’s throw from central Helsinki. Six schools, nearly 20 000 students and a staff of 5 000 together create a whole that rests on three focus areas: research, teaching, and artistic activities. Positioning artistic practices as a foundational element of a multidisciplinary university is a ground breaking gesture that echoes Aalto’s commitment to rethinking the contours and potentialities of contemporary art.

The artistic activities focus area includes a variety of functions: the artist-in-residence programme, public art commissions and acquisitions (the percentage principle), galleries and art spaces, exhibition and event curation, as well as art studies available to all Aalto students (more information: showcase.aalto.fi and uwas.aalto.fi).

Since its inauguration in 2011, Aalto University artist-in-residence programme has welcomed four artists, hosted by three different schools: Marita Liulia (School of Arts, 2011-2012), Ariel Bustamante (School of Arts, 2014-2015), Kabir Carter (School of Electrical Engineering, 2017) and Pilvi Takala (School of Business, 2018). In addition to benefiting from the Aalto University community as a whole, our AiR-programme builds on active partnerships with multiple actors in the Helsinki cultural scene: art museums, galleries, artists’ collectives, art promotion organisations and other residence programmes, such as the Helsinki International Artist Programme (HIAP).

Operation & framework

Aalto University artist-in-residence programme functions as a platform for creative collaborations across disciplines and schools of thought. The programme is driven by our understanding of art as a multifaceted and uncompromising field of knowledge production in which neither knowledge nor production can be reduced to its customary forms. Similarly, we value the university’s active role in fostering the prerequisites of creativity. Our aim is to encourage experimentality, originality and criticality by offering time, space and possibilities for collaboration.

To this end, we want to provide dedicated and internationally active artists with a unique opportunity to work with a truly collaborative community of researchers, students and staff and to avail themselves of Aalto University’s resources for artistic and creative productions for a period of one year. During this time, the artist will pursue her / his own creative project while at the same time engaging with the Aalto University community in various ways: collaborations between departments and schools, occasional periods of teaching, workshops and public presentations. The outcome of the residence period — a work of art, an exhibition, a film, or a project of another kind — will be premiered in the Helsinki region by the end of the year.
