Interaction design education in the era of Artificial Intelligence: bringing ethics to machine learning

This joint talk and workshop by CUMULUS (Dr. Frédérique Krupa, Human Machine Design Lab director, EDNA) and IxDA (Kiat Lim, Regional coordinator for Asia, principal at kiat.sg) explores future trends in design education. Machine learning (ML), a subset of artificial intelligence, is rife with utpian and dystopian myths and magical thinking. ML remains the province of data scientists, engineers and programmers, but this hermetic workflow is clearly showing the limits of an all-technological approach. Designers are taught a wide variety of design methods to explore and understand complex contexts and systems, and this trans-disciplinary, holistic approach is precisely what makes a designer an ideal team member in the ML creation process. How do we establish methods to address sociological concerns around fairness and accuracy of big data? This workshop will introduce machine learning principles and workflows and ask participants to help develop methods for identifying bias that can creep into machine learning models.

ADADA with 101 Guide to Interaction Design Education for the Next Decade –
The Asian chapter

The Goal
It’s 2018 and it’s getting complicated. Software is eating the world, digital culture is everywhere in our hands as a darker side of digital tech is emerging as a public issue. Every business sector, every part of the society is impacted and so is design education. New challenges are ahead of us with Artificial Intelligence & robotics, and it’s probably time to redefine what should be interaction design education for the next decade.

The Game
IxDA and Cumulus organised two workshops in France during the 1st part of the year 2018 in order to enable design practitioners and design educators to share views and opinions. Vision, best practices and ambition for design education were the content and the outcomes of those two workshops.

The Workshop
Introductory presentations are held to guide to the topic. Participants are challenged with one or more burning question(s) on issue for discussion. Any outcomes are squeezed out and participants are welcomed to develop this with Cumulus&IxDA also in the future. The chairs also welcome the participants to contact them before the conference on a topic of interest in relation to the theme the session.

The Chairs
Cumulus: Grégoire Cliquet READi Design Lab (Experimental & Applied Researches in interaction Design) L´École de Design Nantes France
IxDA: tbc

Expected output: A publication with a series of guidelines out under the umbrella of IxDA & Cumulus by May 2019.

This workshop @ADADA Nov 2018 is the continuation of the process started in France.
We would like very much to get an Asian input on the subject ! Welcome!
