This P-R-E session is taking place in context of the conferences Cumulus Conference Guayaquil 2021 and Interaction Latin America 21.

This November 2021 LatAM edition of P-R-E will allow to explore questions appropriate to regions in Latin / South America, taking into account cultural and linguistic contexts.

Cumulus and IxDA have launched a series of Practitioners, Researchers and Educators Days (P-R-E) to encourage focused conversations on identifying critical elements that further capacity building for designers, at different stages of their careers, from studies to professional practice to lifelong learning. These meetings take the form of working groups in partnership with institutions, academia, corporations, and policymakers, who are willing to push the global P-R-E agenda.

The Cumulus+IxDA partnership, with institutions and organisations from different parts of the world, creates diversified and constructed spaces for conversations building on the synergy of education and research expertise, brought by Cumulusians, along with the practitioners’ perspectives brought by IxDA and the local partners.

1. Nataly Restrepo

She is an industrial designer specialized in food design. Her work is based on understanding the relationship between humans and food and how the geopolitical and environmental stakes are evolving the way we eat. She has a strong focus on human-centered design, applying new research methodologies with the objective of creating meaningful design for real changes on the industry. With over 10 years of experience in the food field, she has worked for the restaurant industry, food and coffee producers and for global food brands like Heineken, Pepsico, Nestlé and Danone. In collaboration with Aprende UX, I created the food design education platform and I am currently the director and creator of the Food Design & Innovation Specialty at CENTRO – Diseño, Cine y Televisión in Mexico City, a Cumulus member university. She has also co-founded Kraut Food Studio, an innovation studio focused on designing the future of food and drinks by unlocking the power of trends and consumer behaviours with clients from FMCG brands and HORECA industry.

1. Victor M. Gonzalez, Ph.D
   

Víctor M. González (Ph.D., MSc, Cert. Eng) is a consultant and international expert on human-computer interaction and the design of optimal user experiences for interactive digital products. He is the Founder and Principal at Sperientia [studio+lab] a consultant agency helping companies in Mexico and Latin America to design and create better digital products and services. Based in Mexico City, he serves organizations in sectors such as retail, logistics, health, government, telecom, and finance. He has held positions as a lecturer, professor and researcher at the University of Manchester (UK), Universidad del Azuay (Ecuador) and University of California, at Irvine. He is a professor of the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and teaches on innovation, design thinking, product design and strategic management of technology.

Locality is a reflection on the cultural differences brought about by regional differences in globalization, which emphasizes the realization of multicultural values. In the face of the international challenges of strong cultures, the protection and development of local culture is of great necessity. Contemporary design research and practice is expected to be rooted in national culture, deeply cultivated in traditional wisdom, inherit and continue the regional context, bring-back tradition to contemporary life, and realize the creative transformation of traditional culture. The “local culture” in the discussion of this conference covers the design culture involved in the lifestyle, creation thoughts, and aesthetic attitudes that are with regional characteristics.

As a discipline with strong practicality, the design discipline carries the mission and task of inheriting the national culture, and performing the role of serving national economy and people’s livelihood, as well as exhibiting the nature of cultural confidence. As General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out, fine arts, art, science, and technology complement each other, promote each other, and benefit each other. It is necessary to enhance cultural confidence, by taking aesthetics building as a medium, and strengthen international cultural exchanges.

This conference will be hosted with the hybrition of both online and offline, and is divided into three sections: keynotes, parallel forums and parallel workshops. Register here for free registration. Since 2018, HKDI students from different design programmes had participated in a wide range of workshops and events that aimed at changing norms about dementia through design.

Every September, people come together from all around the world to raise awareness and to challenge the stigma that persists around dementia, which is known as World Alzheimer’s Month. On 25 Sep – 24 Oct 2021, HKDI will present the exhibition Co-creating Dementia Stories, showcasing selected exhibits to which HKDI graduates and students have contributed ideas to address the everyday difficulties encountered by people with dementia, to inspire and motivate the young generation and general public to reimagine a dementia-friendly community for Hong Kong.

The exhibition will take place at A001 Foyer of HKDI & IVE (Lee Wai Lee) campus from 10:00 – 17:00, Monday to Sunday. Guided tours by docents will be available on every Tuesday and Thursday (except public holiday). Please visit this link for details and free registration.

Butterflies Don’t Live in the Ghetto is the title of a long-term Second World War research, exhibition and publication project initiated and curated by Jan Van Woensel and organized in cooperation with the Photography Studio of the Faculty of Design and Art at the University of West Bohemia. Annually, since 2019, students engage in critical and introspective reflection on the history of World War II via research-based and artistic assignments that address the key moments of the war. “Butterflies” establishes a discourse between history and contemporary art and results in exhibitions (Czech Republic, Slovakia, Israel) and a publication featuring artworks, concept texts and essays.

Operation Anthropoid, 27 may 1942 is the subject of the third edition of “Butterflies”. Four leading historians explain the case of the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich by paratroopers Jan Kubiš and Josef Gabčík and the consequential Nazi reprisals, e.g. the eradication of the villages Lidice and Ležáky.

Robert Gerwarth is Professor of Modern History at University College Dublin and Director of the Center for War Studies.
Radka Šustrová is historian, political scientist and researcher at Charles University Prague and University of Cambridge.
Jana Raila Hlavsová is supervisor at the National Memorial of the Heroes of Heydrich’s Terror at the crypts of Saint Cyril and Methodius.
Eduard Stehlík is Director of Lidice Memorial and Museum and military historian.

The event will feature workshops on Typography and Calligraphy followed by a conference dedicated to ‘Hope and Typography’. The international conference will be devoted to addressing issues faced by type designers, type users and type educators. The conference includes presentations by invited keynote speakers, eminent academicians, industry professionals, research scholars and students. The event will also host an exhibition of selected posters from the Poster Design Competition and display work done in design schools.
