Natacha Poggio is a social impact educator, TEDx speaker, and advocate of design for social change. In her teaching at the University of Houston-Downtown, she concentrates on the role nature plays in our lives and encourages students to find solutions that will inspire positive change in society. She is the founding director of Design Global Change (2008), a creative collaborative designing planet-centered solutions to address global health, environmental, and social justice problems. She has over two decades of professional practice, and her work has reached hundreds of communities in Latin America, Africa, and Asia, garnering recognition as a two-time recipient of the Sappi “Ideas that Matter” award. Since 2011, she has been on the Winterhouse Institute Advisory Council (working on the teaching and practice of social innovation in higher education). When not teaching, Natacha is judging competitions; contributing to books and publications on social design, global health, and sustainability; and volunteering for AIGA –the professional association of design. Natacha earned a B.F.A. in Graphic Design from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, and an M.F.A. in Experience Design from The University of Texas at Austin, United States. She is a native of Buenos Aires, Argentina but considers herself a citizen of the world.

José Ignacio López Ramírez Gastón holds a PhD in Computer Music from the University of
California San Diego (UCSD) where he studied under the supervision of Miller Puckette. He is
currently a lecturer at the Universidad Nacional de Música (ex Conservatorio Nacional de
Música), where he is in charge of the music and technology courses, coordinates the Laboratorio
de Música Electroacústica y Arte Sonoro and is Director de Innovación y Transferencia
Tecnológica. He also lectures on Sound Arts and Popular Music at the Pontificia Universidad
Católica del Perú. In 2019 he published the book La Guardia Nueva. Visiones Sobre la Música
Electrónica en el Perú.

Overview of the program
The Cumulus Plus Grant Program is a unique opportunity for researchers, academic and administrative staff to receive a scholarship to attend a Cumulus Conference and benefit from the knowledge exchange and community-building that results from meeting the diversity of our Cumulus members. The program is intended to assist colleagues in a country and/or region of the world typically underrepresented within the Cumulus network, opening the door for mutual learning and future collaboration.

She has colaborated with local NGO´s for the development of political, cultural and artistic projects for women and LGBTQ community. She gives virtual workshops of decolonial studies and class, gender and race critical theory (2020-nowadays). She translates texts and gives translation workshops for the AWTC (Academic Writing and Translation Center) in colaboration with the International Relationships Department at the University of Arts. She will represent the University of Arts as Ambassador for the Cumulus Guayaquil 2021 Conference.

Music production student with experience in audio editing and mixing for new media. Passionate about the artistic sector that is born from innovation and technological vanguards. With a view to generating innovative musical and sound projects, he has entered the world of programming. In addition, he has participated in cultural projects to vindicate independent art in cities like Loja, Saraguro, Otavalo and Guayaquil. He will represent the University of Arts as Ambassador for the Cumulus Guayaquil 2021 Conference.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
The Cumulus Student Ambassador Program is a special student award and merit-based initiative of the Cumulus that recognizes exceptional student leaders from the universities and institutions hosting the Cumulus Association Annual Conferences. Each year, Cumulus invites a total of four Student Ambassadors (two per annual conference) to contribute their singular voices to the Association’s Conferences and the Cumulus community overall.

Through the Cumulus Student Ambassador Program, the Cumulus Association is committed to bringing the perspectives and voices of exceptionally talented and articulate students to the forefront, with the goal of highlighting the changes that the next generation of artists and designers are shaping in an increasingly complex and interconnected global marketplace for art and design.

The Cumulus Green 2022: Nurturing Our Planet competition invites students from all Cumulus member institutions to consider submissions that advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Goals (SDG).

For the 2022 edition, Cumulus is choosing to bring the talent and creativity of its global community to focus on SDG2: Zero Hunger.

Under the umbrella of zero hunger, SDG2 is not only about ending hunger, but also achieving food security and improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture.

The competition will reward the best work with 3 different categories of prizes as well as with honorary mentions. The prize pool is 20.000 EUR.

The judging process is led by jury co-chairs and Cumulus Executive Board representatives, Anne Pikkov and Jose Allard, and international experts in design, cultural diplomacy, sustainability and circular economy including Rahul Bhattacharya, Erik Ciravegna, Dolly Daou, Lynda Deakin, Daniel Grushkin, Philipp Heidkamp, Soojin Jun, Silvana Juri, Anna Meroni, Pedro Reissig, Vishnu Swaminathan, John Thackara, Xiao Yong and Francesca Zampollo.

Cumulus has partnered with the One Club for Creativity to host the submission platform and the jury room of the Cumulus Green 2022 competition. The competition prize pool has been doubled thanks to the sponsorship of BE OPEN Foundation.

This P-R-E session is taking place in context of the conferences Cumulus Conference Guayaquil 2021 and Interaction Latin America 21.

This November 2021 LatAM edition of P-R-E will allow to explore questions appropriate to regions in Latin / South America, taking into account cultural and linguistic contexts.

Cumulus and IxDA have launched a series of Practitioners, Researchers and Educators Days (P-R-E) to encourage focused conversations on identifying critical elements that further capacity building for designers, at different stages of their careers, from studies to professional practice to lifelong learning. These meetings take the form of working groups in partnership with institutions, academia, corporations, and policymakers, who are willing to push the global P-R-E agenda.

The Cumulus+IxDA partnership, with institutions and organisations from different parts of the world, creates diversified and constructed spaces for conversations building on the synergy of education and research expertise, brought by Cumulusians, along with the practitioners’ perspectives brought by IxDA and the local partners.

1. Nataly Restrepo

She is an industrial designer specialized in food design. Her work is based on understanding the relationship between humans and food and how the geopolitical and environmental stakes are evolving the way we eat. She has a strong focus on human-centered design, applying new research methodologies with the objective of creating meaningful design for real changes on the industry. With over 10 years of experience in the food field, she has worked for the restaurant industry, food and coffee producers and for global food brands like Heineken, Pepsico, Nestlé and Danone. In collaboration with Aprende UX, I created the food design education platform and I am currently the director and creator of the Food Design & Innovation Specialty at CENTRO – Diseño, Cine y Televisión in Mexico City, a Cumulus member university. She has also co-founded Kraut Food Studio, an innovation studio focused on designing the future of food and drinks by unlocking the power of trends and consumer behaviours with clients from FMCG brands and HORECA industry.

1. Victor M. Gonzalez, Ph.D
   

Víctor M. González (Ph.D., MSc, Cert. Eng) is a consultant and international expert on human-computer interaction and the design of optimal user experiences for interactive digital products. He is the Founder and Principal at Sperientia [studio+lab] a consultant agency helping companies in Mexico and Latin America to design and create better digital products and services. Based in Mexico City, he serves organizations in sectors such as retail, logistics, health, government, telecom, and finance. He has held positions as a lecturer, professor and researcher at the University of Manchester (UK), Universidad del Azuay (Ecuador) and University of California, at Irvine. He is a professor of the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) and teaches on innovation, design thinking, product design and strategic management of technology.

This month brought back to me one of the great joys of serving in the Cumulus Executive Board: the opportunity to “break bread” and hold intensive working sessions in person again with my fellow board members, a group of academic leaders from around the world deeply committed to the stewardship of our association.

After eighteen months of the uneventful surroundings of our digital square grids, we could not have convened in a more inspiring environment, both literally and figuratively. Most of our board traveled to Salzburg, where we were hosted by Cumulus partner, the Salzburg Global Seminar, in their storied 18th-century site and seminar facilities, Schloss Leopoldskron. Once the lovingly restored home of the theater impresario and Salzburg Music Festival founder Max Reinhardt, the magnificent property and grounds became part of the Salzburg Global Seminar in 1947 – a time deeply scarred by the ravages and horrors of World War Two. As an independent non-profit institution, Salzburg Global Seminar started with the courage and “dare to dream” audacity of three university students: two Americans and an Austrian. Determined not to see the atrocities of the war ever occur again, they came together. They raised a seed fund to acquire a dilapidated palace in the outskirts of Salzburg, turning the place into an academic summer camp of sorts, one to gather beyond disparate ideologies to seek common ground and pursue a “Marshall Plan for the Mind.” All of these years later, their vision has evolved into a globally connected organization with a legacy of programs, coalitions, and a network of Global Fellows committed to bridging cultures and shifting the terms of debate to incite action for a better future.

As a Fellow, it was a privilege to facilitate the introduction of this institution to colleagues. I am grateful to the Salzburg Global Seminar leadership team for their warm welcome and for engaging in dialogue to activate our formal partnership. Stay tuned. The Secretariat will share more about opportunities ahead that we are looking to shape across many of our initiatives.

On my plane ride home to New York after the board meeting and great visits with members and Cumulus partners in Barcelona, I had some time to pour over a few of the publications from the Salzburg Global Seminar library. I leave you with a quote on leadership, a subject I teach to my graduate students at Parsons, from the 2017 Inaugural Salzburg Lecture delivered by Thulisile Nomkhosi Madonsela, Professor Law Faculty Trust Chair in Social Justice, University of Stellenbosch, and former Public Protector of South Africa:

“Progress at all levels requires the kind of leadership behind the Salzburg story. We need leadership that focuses on the glimmers of light amidst darkness. We need leadership that leverages those sparks of light and turns despair into hope, and light into darkness.”

Here’s to leveraging those sparks of light around us!
