Nordic Biomaterials by CHEMARTS

In the coming years, our material world will change dramatically. The overuse of existing raw materials cannot continue and global consumption must decrease! Learn how we should tackle these issues by combining technology, design, and new forms of biomaterials. This is a practical summer course in sustainable design and material science in collaboration with Aalto ChemArts. The scholarship is directed towards young designers especially in the areas of jewellery, fashion, accessory and industrial design. Interdisciplinary working methods are welcome. The deadline for applications is November 15, 2020.

Pforzheim University, a Cumulus member, invites international students to apply for the scholarship. In total there will be three scholarships for a three-month working phase at the EMMA Creative Center in Pforzheim. The scholarship holders will have access to fully equipped workshop workplaces as well as coworking desks in the EMMA Creative Center. The EMMA Creative Center is the central platform for creative people in Pforzheim. The creative center is housed on the premises of a former swimming pool designed in the art nouveau style next to the river Enz in Pforzheim. The creative center has an area of 3,000†m‡2 and offers workshops and co-working workplaces, ateliers, offices and exhibition spaces. The town of Pforzheim is also characterized by an active creative scene which is focused on the area of design. Pforzheim University has established Pforzheim as a university town with an international reputation.

Scholarship benefits
The scholarship includes use of fully equipped workshop workplaces in the EMMA Creative Center and free accommodation for the period from April 1 to June 30, 2021. In addition, each scholarship holder will receive a monthly support of 1,000 euros together with travel costs. A special allowance will be made available for material costs. The results of the scholarship will be presented in an exhibition at the EMMA Creative Center and in cooperation with the Design    Center Baden-Württemberg in Stuttgart.

As a programme of “HKDI Global Design Studio” in 2020, this international joint student project “Urban Future: People • Communications • Architecture” joined by students of Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI)  and Ravensbourne University London (Ravensbourne) who were from architecture, interior design and communication design programmes. Throughout the process, students of HKDI and Ravensbourne were challenged to observe, record, investigate and analyse different urban conditions in the designated areas. They interacted with the inhabitants there, formulated their own insights and visualised new ideas as for new ideas for the streets and local communities of the area. By the end of project, students also instigated reflection on cultures and communities, gentrification, sustainability, ageing population and poverty etc., and insights on shaping the urban futures.

The Studio uses the roots and history to open hidden cultural codes embedded in the history of Venice, Vincenza and Padova. It combines knowledge of the legacy of Palladio, Vitruvius, Leonardo etc. bridging it with the Venice Biennale.
We mobilise the next generation of talented Master and PhD students and recent graduates to share knowledge and experience with advanced scholars and professionals in Art, Design, Media and Architecture.
The course is organised in collaboration with Dr. Kärt Summatavet, University of Tartu with endorsement from Cumulus.

Note to all Cumulus members: Two scholarships will be handed out to a master and/or doctorate student. The scholarship will reduce the course fee to only 500€. As one of the most significant academic activities of Beijing Design Week, Design Day Marathon (DDM) is a major international competition jointly held by Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology and many other universities domestic and overseas. It has been four years since 2016, with about 600 participating students, covering more than 100 institutions. Committed to promoting a win-win situation between enterprises and academia, Design Day Marathon allows teachers, students and experts in the industry gather together to brainstorm and find solutions to design problems of enterprises and institutions. It also provides an effective channel of design talents for enterprises.

During the pandemic, we have moved our daily operations and teachings online. Therefore, you must feel that you are more and less like a “Internet Celebrity”. In view of this, we are planing to set Design Day Marathon 2020 as a “Live Broadcast” workshop and launch a knowledge-based online program with the theme of “Thank God I’m Doing Pretty Well”to show your resilience of work and living during the past days of 2020.

We name this multi-program workshop as Marathon Live Jam. It’s like an open, fun and mobile market. Individual teachers or schools can apply for a 1-2 hours program upon request, and host a “program booth” during the Design Day Marathons in mid-September.We will rely on platforms either Streamyard or OSB for broadcasting, and the content will be pushed to the main streaming platforms both China and Worldwide.

If the uncertainty of the venue, travel, and the variable contents are the challenges of this year’s marathon, then those will be a great opportunity for teachers to use live media to host knowledge-based programs as well, combining hot topics with interesting programs such as: Lifestyle During Pandemic, Remote Work Platforms, Hands-on Video Shooting Tutorial, Virtual Roundtables, Live Commerce, Digital Education Tools Sharing, etc.

HDK-Valand – Academy of Art and Design, at the University of Gothenburg, conducts education and research in Design, Film, Photography, Fine Art, Crafts and Literary Composition – as well as teacher education in Visual Arts and Sloyd.

Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), together with University of the Arts Poznan, Poland (UAP), is pleased to present “Imaging Poland” – an educational and cultural programme supported by the Consulate General of Poland in Hong Kong that showcases a selection of both still and animated images created by designers from UAP from 13 to 21 September 2018 at the HKDI campus. The event features an interactive exhibition, a master lecture and screenings of a documentary movie and short animated films, offering both students and the general public a kaleidoscopic view of Polish design since the post-war period to contemporary era. The event is also part of the International Cultural Agenda established by UAP to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Poland regaining its independence.

Curated by Mateusz Bieczyński, the exhibition showcases a selection of the very best Polish poster designs from 1928 up till now, with particular emphasis on works created for the film industry after 1989. It presents artists from older generation – e.g. Henryk Tomaszewski and Waldemar Świerzy – as well as younger poster designers, such as: Tomasz Bogusławski, Eugeniusz Skorwider, Lex Drewiński, Grzegorz Marszałek and Mirosław Adamczyk, Marcin Markowski, Max Skorwider, Szymon Szymankiewicz, Łukasz Chmielewski, Bartosz Mamak, Grzegorz Myćka. In total, around 200 posters by more than 70 artists will be presented during the exhibition.

Polish posters are internationally renowned for their unique style developed between 1950 and 1965. Also after 1989, Polish poster designers have been highly appreciated in largest and most important graphic design reviews (festivals and biennales) worldwide. From USA to Australia, throughout Europe and Asia, Polish designers have continuously won prestigious prizes – grand prix and honoured mentions – in graphic design.

Exhibition

The exhibition “Imaging Poland – Polish Movie Poster”emphasises the changes that have taken place in poster design field over last 70 years. Developed by the “Polish Poster School”, a baroque-decorative style has been replaced by visual symbolic imagery. Although the traces of painting are still visible in some recent projects, the main stream of poster design is strongly influenced by new media. A so-called self-edition poster is also skilfully combining visual associations and stylistic diversity to transmit the message more clearly than ever before. Projects of the contemporary posters have become detached from the traditional form of their presentation, i.e. a piece of paper with dimensions of 100 x 70 cm. Today they are presented in urban spaces (i.e. on billboards and city-lights), as well as on digital screens and on the Internet.

The Exhibition venue will transform itself into a multimedia environment for this exhibition, becoming a combination of an interactive game that invites visitors to participate in the visual spectacle.

Master Lecture

A master lecture will offer an overview on the development of poster design in Poland. Its contents are divided into three parts, namely “Hunting Originality. Polish Poster Design after WWII – the evolution of styles and techniques”, by Dr. Mateusz Bieczyński, Vice-Rector of UAP; “Stereotypes, Symbols, ‘Cliche’ …and Beyond – Polish Graphic Design” by Prof. Krzysztof Molenda, followed by a Panel Discussion.

Film and Animation Screenings

The screening of “Commissioned: The Art of The Polish Film Poster” will be held as a prelude to the opening ceremony of “Imaging Poland”. The documentary traces the origins of a movement, its cultural relevance and historical importance of this unique design aesthetic. It features interviews with directors and designers including Martin Scorsese, Agnieszka Holland, Andrzej Wajda, Milton Glaser and more.

Another screenings featuring animated short films created by designers of UAP will also be presented during the event. Both of the screening sessions will be opened with an introduction by UAP’s Vice-Rector, Dr. Mateusz Bieczyński.
