The Academy of Design and Crafts (HDK) in Gothenburg, Sweden has the ambition of being one of the most attractive and exhilarating art colleges in Europe. The academy is home to research and education in design, crafts and pedagogical sciences. The crafts programmes and courses at HDK in Gothenburg constitute a complete environment involving continual exchange and networking between undergraduate education, research and society at large. Crafts programmes and courses are available at all levels: Bachelor’s, Master’s and Postgraduate. The crafts education at HDK thus consists of three programmes at Bachelor’s level: ceramic art, jewellery art and textile art. At the Master’s level the programme is entitled Crafts, with three specialisations: ceramic art, jewellery art and textile art.HDK offers Postgraduate education with Crafts as one of the subjects. The academy is unique in Sweden for its right to conduct examinations at the postgraduate level in this subject.

Specific subject description
Crafts as a subject encompasses the span between skilled handicraft, conceptual creativity and research-based enterprise. A reflective approach links together the various factors of material, method, function and tradition. At HDK, research is undertaken to investigate the possibilities for this subject to generate understanding for our life and times by means of artistic creativity. It is a non-linear process that has materials or an idea as its point of departure. The process is ongoing in the form of a dialogue between practitioners, methods, materials and the world around.
Ceramic art has clay as its material starting point and artistic medium. Based on the various attitudes, perspectives and influences of students, staff and guest artists, HDK Ceramic Art constitutes a meeting place for the development of all kinds of ideas and expressions belonging to artistic creativity. Clay as a material and the concept of ceramic art are investigated by means of various techniques, forms of expression and contexts. Familiarity with the material is developed parallel to the evolution of an artistic language and an attentive attitude to the diverse possibilities of working in this field.
HDK has well-equipped workshops and studios. In addition to the premises in central Gothenburg, the crafts programmes and courses have at their disposal a unique assembly of kilns at Nääs, about 35 kilometres outside Gothenburg. This assembly includes several wood-fired kilns with studios belonging to them and available.

Work assignments
The appointment involves close cooperation with the programme managers and other professors in crafts in the planning and implementation of the Master’s Programme in crafts.The applicant will be expected to develop the courses and programmes in the field of ceramic art at the BA and MA levels.
Part of this work will be participating in meetings of the teaching staff and also departmental meetings at HDK. Work assignments include among other things planning, teaching, supervisions, contact with the students and quality-raising initiatives concerning the programmes and courses.

Eligibility
According to the Higher Education Ordinance ch. 4 § 4:3, a person who has demonstrated both artistic and pedagogical knowledge and skills is qualified to be appointed as a professor in artistic higher education.

This position also has a minimum requirement of:
Artistic higher education at advanced level/the equivalent in ceramic art

For assessment of artistic knowledge and skills
•Documented experience of her/his own enterprise in the field of ceramic art
•Artistic originality rooted in the field of ceramic art
•High profile in artistic and professional national/international contexts in the field of ceramic art
•Extensive insight into the sphere of ceramic art from both a nordic and an international perspective
For assessment of pedagogical knowledge and skills
•Pedagogical experience of teaching and supervision, preferably in higher education
•Demonstrated ability to lead and implement high quality education and pedagogical activities
•Good capacity to communicate knowledge and also engagement and interest for the subject itself
•Familiarity with theoretical discourses and current discussions within the subject area of Ceramic Art
Other criteria for assessment
•Documented experience of having successfully developed and led artistic projects
•Documented experience of having successfully developed and led artistic and/or academic departments and arenas
•Confirmed capacity to build networks
•International and/or national networks within the subject area and related subject areas
•Very good capacity for teamwork
•Very good organisational ability
•Very good administrative ability
•Very good knowledge of and skills in English, both oral and written

We will make an overall evaluation and appoint the person who is considered to have the best qualifications for implementing and developing the work assignments described above. Also significant is the applicant’s approach to crafts and how this approach impacts HDK’s profile. Great importance will be attached to personal suitability.

The applicant must have completed or will be expected to complete a course in university pedagogy, or must otherwise be able to document acquired equivalent knowledge and skills (15 credits).

Employment
This is a fixed term position, 5 years, 50%.
