PROFESSOR OF PRACTICE IN CONTEMPORARY DESIGN
Applied art and design has a long and illustrious history at Aalto University and its predecessor with consistent international visibility and recognition. In order to maintain its leadership in the field, Aalto ARTS has opened a call to find a Professor of Practice in Contemporary Design. The university is looking for a person who excels on the field of experimental product design and builds collaborative dialogue with contemporary arts, media and culture at large. The professor explores new forums of presenting design and new models of entrepreneurial design activity. Professor of Practice in Contemporary Design strategically updates the field to meet the complex demands of today and the future. The professor elevates and redefines the field of exploratory product design by developing teaching and artistic/professional activities and creating interfaces towards research. The professor broadens the perspectives of design by embracing new technologies and materials and establishing active multidisciplinary collaboration with stakeholders within and outside Aalto University. The professor instils entrepreneurial spirit to teaching.
Professor of Practice in Contemporary design exercises and leads creative design practice, plans, leads and provides education, engages in the local and international development of the field, and participates in service to the Aalto University community.
The successful candidate will be appointed for a fixed 5-year term with the title of Professor of Practice. The position will commence on October 1, 2017 or as agreed.
Requirements
Professor of Practice position is subject to external evaluation. A successful applicant is expected to have significant internationally recognized artistic achievements in the field of design, strong experience in contemporary design practices and wide leadership experience in the field of design. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of the following areas:
artistic merits in design practice,
teaching experience and achievements,
research and/or professional publishing,
cross-disciplinary collaborative and leadership skills, and
activity in the design and/or academic community.
Salary
Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

The application process includes two phases. In the first phase the applicants are required to submit the following material:
Motivation letter
Curriculum vitae, max 5 pages, including contact information
List of publications including design and artistic productions (the most important ones to be marked with an asterisk)
Design portfolio including 5 most significant projects and/or publications in a PDF form (max. file size 100 MB)
Statement describing the applicant´s vision of contemporary design field and teaching (max 2 pages)
All application materials should be submitted in English. Aalto University does not accept any letters of recommendations during the application process.
Aalto University may perform a publication data analysis of the applicants’ scientific publications based on the applicant’s CV and list of publications unless the applicant declines the analysis. This information is used to measure scientific activity and it will be collected and analyzed based on information available on public databases.
From amongst the applicants in the first phase, Aalto University will select those who will be asked to supplement their application materials with e.g. a teaching portfolio, and to visit the School of Arts, Design and Architecture. Supplemented applications are submitted for review by external experts (the second phase of the application process).
