Cumulus endorses the prestigious jumpthegap® 10 Roca International Design Contest with participation of President Mariana Amatullo https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/cumulus-endorses-the-prestigious-jumpthegap-10-roca-international-design-contest-with-participation-of-president-mariana-amatullo/ Thu, 19 Aug 2021 07:07:48 +0000 http://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/?p=1879516 Registration and Submission deadline extended until 6th of September.

Awards ceremony will take place in Barcelona on 14 October as part of Barcelona Design Week’s City Festival.

The deadline to participate in Roca’s international design contest jumpthegap® has been extended. Architects and designers from all over the world now have until 6 September to submit their best ideas for the bathroom space, which must address and advance the goals set out by the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

This deadline extension is the result of a progressive improvement of the COVID-19 situation in Spain, which makes it possible to plan a hybrid awards ceremony at Roca Barcelona Gallery on 14 October 2021 as part of Barcelona Design Week’s City Festival, in keeping with the tradition and spirit of jumpthegap®.

Participants are invited to submit their designs at www.jumpthegap.net, either individually or in groups of two. The competition, which is organised in collaboration with BcD Barcelona Design centre, is divided into four categories: Wellness & Health, designs that deliver new levels of comfort and peace of mind for users and clients, promoting balance and harmony; [Un]neutral design, projects that ingeniously and meaningfully address the bodily diversity and the wide range of capacities displayed by human beings, facilitating independent living through new creative personal aid features; Water & Energy, projects that promote a smart and conscious use of planetary resources; and Crisis & Emergency, designs that tackle a context of permanent crisis and emergency with the help of flexible, feasible and replicable materials and technologies.

The projects will be assessed by a jury of renowned professionals led by Japanese architect and 2014 Pritzker Prize winner Shigeru Ban (Jury President), and which also includes Somi Kim, Senior Director, Healthcare Solutions at Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Design; Paul Priestman, Designer, Chairman of PriestmanGoode; Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, Founders of Formafantasma design studio; Deborah Seward, Director of United Nations Regional Information Centre in Belgium; Mariana Amatullo, President of Cumulus International Association of Universities and Colleges of Art, Design and Media; Isabel Roig, Executive Director of BcD Barcelona Design centre and President of World Design Weeks; and Marc Viardot, Roca Group’s Corporate Marketing and Design Director.

There will be a total of 13 prizes awarded: four prizes of €2,000 for the winner of each category, eight prizes of €500 for the 1st and 2nd runner up of each category, and a grand prize of €5,000 for the ‘Best of the Best’ project, selected from the four winners.

This 10th edition of jumpthegap® marks a new stage in the development of Roca’s international design contest, driven by the crucial challenges we face today both as individuals and as a society. Its new look into the future draws from the cross-cutting challenges posed by the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in terms of health care and hygiene, preservation of the planet, respect for diversity or equal access to technological advances. Participants must present solutions that are technologically feasible, provide added value to innovation and show diversity, sustainability, timelessness and adaptability. For further information, please visit: www.jumpthegap.net.

About jumpthegap®
jumpthegap® is an international design contest promoted by Roca since 2004. Held every two years in collaboration with BcD Barcelona Design centre, its main goal is to offer a platform where architecture and design professionals and students from all over the globe can develop and showcase their talent, coming up with creative solutions for the bathroom space.

jumpthegap®’s new look into the future draws from the cross-cutting challenges posed by the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in terms of health care and hygiene, preservation of the planet, respect for diversity or equal access to technological advances. Consequently, the contest challenges new generations of designers and architects to come up with real and innovative solutions for the bathroom space, whether public or private, with a truly social, inclusive and sustainable focus. The final objective for all contestants is to design a product or service that solves any of the challenges included in the 2030 Agenda, provides added innovative value and is technologically viable.

The screening will focus mainly on three aspects: whether thedesign provided (1) solutions for urban life issues, (2) visions forthe future, and (3) global values.

Another special award titled the “Safety & Security Award” is also introduced for the first time. This award will be presented to a project that helped maintain safety and security in cities in the face of threats from infectious diseases, natural disasters, and crimes.

53 Finalist Teams to Present Biotech Designs at Biodesign Challenge Summit 2021 https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/53-finalist-teams-to-present-biotech-designs-at-biodesign-challenge-summit-2021/ Thu, 03 Jun 2021 08:38:00 +0000 http://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/?p=1844500 Students partnered with artists, designers, and scientists to envision the future of biotechnology.

June 21-25, 2021 – 53 finalist teams from 20 countries will compete for the Glass Microbe at the online Biodesign Challenge Summit 2021. Teams have spent the academic year creating projects that bridge art, design, and biology to reimagine more equitable and sustainable futures. Their innovative ideas explore topics such as medicine, architecture, fashion, food, materials, bioethics, and more. There will also be an online student gallery exhibition on June 21.

Over 60 leading experts in academia, industry, and the arts will judge and award prizes. This year’s sponsored prizes include the Barilla Prize for Regenerative Living Ecosystems and the Science Sandbox Prize for Public Engagement.

Summit speakers include Janina Jeff, geneticist and host of the podcast In Those Genes; Kathy High, artist, curator, and scholar of bioart; and Lisa Margonelli, author and senior editor of Issues in Science and Technology. Speakers will give their talks on Friday, June 25th.

BDC aims to foster the first generation of biodesigners who use the life sciences as a tool to create and critique applications of biotechnology. The students come from across disciplines to explore the ethical implications of current and future biotech.

“To serve society as an entirety, science and technology need to be equally accessible to everyone at each stage of creation. I’m looking forward to this year’s Summit dialogues around what we want from our technologies,” says Daniel Grushkin, founder and Executive Director of Biodesign Challenge.

Over the last six years, BDC alumni have gone on to form sustainability-based startups (raising over $6M+ collectively), receive patents, and win notable awards including the H&M Global Change Award, National Geographic Chasing Genius Award, LVMH Innovation Award, Prix Ars Electronica, among others.

Alumni have traveled the world to engage the public at museums and festivals, including the V&A, London Design Biennale, Gregg Museum, World Economic Forum, the Tech Museum, Dutch Design Week, MIT, and the United Nations.

Sign up to attend the event here: https://biodesignchallenge.org/summit-2021
