Design is a method of creating happy & satisfied societies https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/design-method-of-creating-happy-satisfied-societies/ https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/design-method-of-creating-happy-satisfied-societies/#respond Thu, 26 Nov 2020 12:49:37 +0000 http://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/?p=1406407 Congratulations to our member university, Art Academy of Latvia in Riga and Technological University Dublin for enabling Ms Aija Freimane to contribute to the success of the planet!

Cumulus also wants to congratulate Aija Freimane on her first post-doctoral research at Art Academy of Latvia!

Dear Cumulus colleagues and friends,

Art Academy of Latvia is proud to share knowledge, developed as the first postdoctoral research in design in Latvia, financed by European regional Development Fund. Our associate professor, fellow postdoctoral researcher in design, Aija Freimane, PhD, was curious how to witness design added value. Ideas such as “good design always creates good value” and “design adds value” support the proposition that design impacts society and contributes to the economy but do not provide reliable and evidence-based tools to demonstrate that fact.

The postdoctoral study ‘Identification system of design’s socio-economic impact towards transformation to a knowledge-intensive economy in Latvia’ was a global–local case study that aimed to discuss added value of design by recommending indicators of perceived value that measures cultural and personal satisfaction, happiness and wellbeing as a result of design’s socio-economic impact from the user’s perspective across five generations and four socioeconomic class groups. Triple design process and design maturity matrix are proposed to witness design’s added value in a framework of redefined design definition.

We are happy to share developed knowledge in design theory as case-study results ‘Perceived design value. The socio-economic of Design’.

The Vienna Declaration is intended as a policy document addressing political decision makers, funding bodies, higher education and research institutions as well as other organisations and individuals catering for and undertaking Artistic Research. The Vienna Declaration, co-written by AEC, Cilect / GEECT, Culture Action Europe, Cumulus, EAAE, ELIA EPARM, EQ-ARTS, MusiQuE and SAR, is the first outcome of this important collaboration.

See the declaration here.

Thank you to our partners for the beautiful cooperation!

The initiative is open for the involvement of other international organisations proving legitimate interest. Any inquiries? Please contact: Eija Salmi, eija.salmi(at)aalto.fi

Circular Design programme by Ellen MacArthur Foundation https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/circular-design-programme-by-ellen-macarthur-foundation/ https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/circular-design-programme-by-ellen-macarthur-foundation/#respond Mon, 09 Sep 2019 21:35:23 +0000 http://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/?p=957619 Join the Circular Design Community!

We estimate that designers and creators represent 5% of the global workforce, and they will play a crucial role in designing the world we live in by 2025.
Our ambition is to empower this 5%, and make designing for the circular economy the new normal by 2025.

Designing for a circular economy is one of the biggest creative challenges of our time. We need a new approach and an orchestrated global programme to support designers and creators. Along with our partners and extended network of brands, startups, governments, academics, and thought-leaders, the Ellen MacArthur Foundation aims to:
1. Reach 80 million designers and creators
2. Engage 20 million designers and creators
3. Demonstrate thousands of circular solutions

Call for Papers Artifact: Journal of Design Practice https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/call-for-papers-artifact-journal-of-design-practice/ https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/call-for-papers-artifact-journal-of-design-practice/#respond Mon, 15 Apr 2019 12:17:00 +0000 http://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/?p=914617 Artifact: Journal of Design Practice is an Open Access journal that publishes double-blind peer-reviewed design research examining the nature of, developments in, and understandings of design practices.

Artifact does not charge APCs or submission fees.

Design research is rapidly becoming a knowledge-intensive field, characterized by an overwhelming scholarly interest in design’s many interfaces, from the role of design in solving societal problems, to enhancing the sustainability and profitability of businesses across industries and geographies. Artifact encourages contributions from diverse perspectives related to both traditional and the emerging new activities of design, professions of design, and organizational uses of design. The journal aims to reflect recent decades’ substantial transformation of the field of design research, with contributions that touch on design practices from a broad spectrum of scientific fields such as semiotics, design semantics, critical discourse analysis, science and technology studies, design(erly) thinking, management, organization, and material history.

We invite manuscripts that may engage with (but are not limited to) any of the following themes:
-Theoretical and conceptual perspectives on the nature of current and future design practices.
-Theoretical and empirical inquiries into the nature and understandings of design practices.
-The role of design practice in shaping and realizing entrepreneurial processes and/or strategies.
-The role of design practice in relation to societal or organizational change, innovation and value creation from a competitive, financial, social or sustainability perspective.

Broad questions that may be considered are:
-Is it possible to limit domain-specific bodies of professional knowledge and authorized procedures of design?
-What are the roles of classical design disciplines such as craft-based design, graphic design, industrial design, etc. in relation to the growing interest in the concept of ‘design thinking’?
-In a time where the boundaries between professional design fields tend to blur, does it any longer make sense to talk about a professional design practice, rather than many ways of practicing design?

Submission guidelines
Prospective authors should ensure their papers follow the Artifact: Journal of Design Practice author guidelines and Intellect Style Guide. All submission must include a signed Open Access publishing agreement giving us permission to publish your paper, should it be accepted by our peer-review panel. For questions regarding submission procedures or any additional information please contact editor-in-chief, Nicky Nedergaard, nned@kadk.dk.

Abstract submission by April 1, 2019

A peer-reviewed publication of Parsons School of Design in New York City, welcomes submissions for its Spring 2020 issue, addressing the theme “The Design of Influence.”

This issue of The Journal of Design Strategies invites exploration and analysis of the design of actual or possible nudge initiatives, with a special focus on ethical dimensions of those initiatives. How does recent research on human behavior and decision-making change our understanding of the power or agency of design and thus of the ethical obligations of those involved in the design professions?

Sustainable Cumulus shares: The Transforming Australia – SDG Progress Report https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/sustainable-cumulus-shares-the-transforming-australia-sdg-progress-report/ https://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/sustainable-cumulus-shares-the-transforming-australia-sdg-progress-report/#respond Tue, 25 Sep 2018 08:55:51 +0000 http://sites.aalto.fi/cumulus/?p=777228

The Transforming Australia: SDG Progress Report provides key information about how Australia is progressing towards achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. If Australia is to reap the benefits of the UN SDGs, we need to track progress in implementing them, while ensuring we leave no one behind.
Australian data has been made available on this site with analysis and reports on our progress. Broader Australian themes draw different goals together, giving insight to where combined efforts are needed to build positive change across the goals.

Vol. 5: Nº 4 Design and Heritage

The call for the next issue of Base, Design and Innovation magazine is now open. In this edition, our central theme will be DESIGN AND HERITAGE. We invite you to write articles that reflect on the relationship between design and heritage: What are the elements of design that contribute to value patrimony? How does design create heritage? Who builds patrimony: citizens or State institutions?

In addition, we will publish projects that contribute to make visible, conserve, expose, reinvent traditions, objects, landscapes, etc. We look forward for your proposals.
